Isolate and identify Salmonella and Shigella spp. from clinical or food samples with Thermo Scientific™ Salmonella Shigella Agar (SS Agar) / XLD Agar biplates. The selectivity of the media aids the recovery of salmonellae and shigellae from mixed specimens and inhibits profuse growth of other species, while the convenient biplate format frees up incubator space.

Salmonella and Shigella are major causes of bacterial enteric illness with transmission occuring via the fecal-oral route, person-to-person contact, or by the ingestion of contaminated food or water. Salmonella Shigella Agar (SS Agar) / XLD Agar is ideal for screening samples containing mixed flora and suspected of harbouring enteric pathogens, e.g., medical specimens or food products.

Widely recognised in international standards, XLD Agar, relies on xylose fermentation, lysine decarboxylation and production of hydrogen sulphide for the primary differentiation of Shigella and Salmonella spp. from non-pathogenic bacteria. The sensitivity and selectivity of XLD Agar exceeds that of the traditional plating media, e.g., Eosin Methylene Blue and Bismuth Sulphite agars, which tend to suppress the growth of shigellae.

Our formulation of Salmonella Shigella Agar (SS Agar) has been modified from the original for improved performance. Although widely used, traditional SS Agar has been criticized because of excessive inhibition of Shigella species. Alterations to the bile salt mixture, peptone and pH value considerably improve the growth of shigellae without too much increased growth of commensal organisms. Salmonella colonies are also larger with improved blackening at the centre to aid identification.

XLD Agar is recommended in the ISO 6579 testing of Salmonella and is tested according to ISO 11133-2.
