Selectively isolate Listeria monocytogenes in food samples with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Oxford Modified Agar Base (Dehydrated).
In 1989, Curtis described a selective and differential medium to isolate L. monocytogenes from specimens with mixed flora. This is known as the Oxford Agar1. Lee and McClain developed a selective medium to isolate L. monocytogenes from food products using colistin and moxalactam2 in place of the original selective agents2. This medium is recommended by the American Public Health Association (APHA) for the recovery of L. monocytogenes from meat and dairy products3,4.
Listeria monocytogenes is a common contaminant in raw milk, meats, vegetables, seafood and in the food processing environment. The ability to isolate the organism has been impeded in the past by lack of an effective selective medium, as Listeria monocytogenes can be easily overgrown by competing flora.
Use Oxford Modified Agar Base for selective isolation and detection of Listeria monocytogenes from food and environmental samples.
- Selective: Lithium chloride and colistin inhibit growth of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.
- Recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety Inspection Service and the American Public Health Association (APHA).
Oxford Agar Base Modified contains Columbia Agar Base that provides peptones and serves as the source of essential nutrients. L. monocytogenes hydrolyzes esculin to produce esculetin which combines with ferric ammonium citrate to form a black precipitate in the medium that surrounds the colonies. Lithium chloride and colistin act as selective agents. Moxalactam Selective Supplement (REF R450551) is added to the medium to increase selectivity.
