Which Technologies Make it Possible to Reduce Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact with High Performance Floor Model Centrifuges?

Introduction

Superspeed centrifuges are critical instruments in both basic research and bioprocessing applications, and their continuous use can significantly contribute to the overall energy consumption of a lab. To manage energy consumption and environmental impact in high-use environments, the Thermo Scientific™ Sorvall™ LYNX 4000 and LYNX 6000 superspeed centrifuges feature a Green Mode, enabling the centrifuge to sleep when not in use for more than 2 hours. With the Sorvall LYNX 6000 centrifuge, further energy savings are made possible with its Smart Vacuum feature. Additionally, these centrifuges comply with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives, and are packaged in environmentally-friendly materials.

Green Mode

When not in use for more than 2 hours, a Sorvall LYNX superspeed centrifuge can be set to sleep via its Green Mode. A simple touch on the control panel wakes the centrifuge for immediate use. During low-use periods, such as nights and weekends, this can save significant power – up to 64% when compared to our previous generation of Thermo Scientific superspeed centrifuges (figure 1).

Smart Vacuum

Smart Vacuum, available on the Sorvall LYNX 6000 centrifuge, removes up to 80% of the air inside the centrifuge chamber. As a result, air friction on the spinning rotor is greatly reduced, and the power required to spin and cool the rotor is decreased by up to 74% when compared to identical run conditions on our previous generation of Thermo Scientific superspeed centrifuges (figure 2).

Eco-Friendly Product Packaging

Superspeed centrifuges are packaged in recycled corrugated cartons with a biodegradable protective cover. Additionally, the fresh wood fiber used for transportation is produced on sustainable plantations where each tree cut down is replaced by two new plants, supporting forest ecosystem management.
