Reduce Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact With Production-Level Centrifuges

Large capacity centrifuges are critical instruments in both blood banking and bioprocessing applications. Often used in production environments on a 24 hours per day, seven days per week schedule, these centrifuges can significantly contribute to the overall energy consumption of a lab.

To manage energy and environmental impact, several sustainable features are available for today’s centrifuges including:

  • Energy-efficient rotor design
  • Increased capacity compared with legacy systems
  • Efficient cooling systems
  • Environmentally-friendly packaging

Total system sustainability in compliance with Restriction of Hazardous substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives also ensures that hazardous substances are avoided, environmental pollution is reduced, and electronic substances are optimally designed.

Energy-Efficient Rotor Design

Thermo Scientific™ large capacity centrifuges achieve up to 64% energy savings with Thermo Scientific™ Eco-Spin™ windshielded rotors when compared with non-windshielded rotors.1

Efficient Cooling Systems

No CFC refrigerant is used and scheduled cooling programs allow for the compressor to be used only when necessary.

"Energy-saving mode shuts off the automatic cooling function when the instrument is not in use."

Additionally, the cooling system is shut off with the Thermo Scientific™ Auto-Door™ centrifuge opening.

Increased Capacity

Three new large capacity centrifuges can separate the same amount of samples as four legacy units, an increased capacity of 33%. A significant energy consumption and footprint saving is thus realized as the volume of simultaneous centrifugation is increased.2

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Eco-friendly packaging employs more than 75% recycled material and no polystyrene foam, with biodegradable foam pellets and foam-in-place methods being used instead. In addition, the glue used for the cardboard box is produced from natural raw materials.

Eco-packaging also supports forest ecosystem management, using fresh wood fibre for transportation that is produced on sustainable plantations where each tree cut down is replaced by two saplings. Inbound wooden pallets are also reused rather than discarded.

Summary

In a production environment of continuous use, Thermo Scientific™ large capacity centrifuges provide substantial energy savings in an eco-friendly form through the use of Eco-Spin™ windshielded rotors, innovative cooling control features, increased capacity, and modern packaging.
